The Orville Premier Review / Thoughts

I’ll just get this out of the way at the top. I really enjoyed the first episode of The Orville.

The Orville is half Star Trek satire, half it’s own thing. Actually, I don’t even want to say it’s satire at all, it’s really not. It’s a Star Trek-style show with a humorous bent. The aesthetic is very clearly TNG era Star Trek. At least as much as they can get away with, without being sued by CBS.

I’m a little bummed that Ron Jones is not composing the music for this series. With the show being so Star Trek referencing, and that McFarlane has used Jones in the past it would just make sense to me. But the music itself was actually well done and fit the show quite well.

The show is very much playing on my nostalgia for ’90s Trek. It’s scratching that itch much better than any of the reboots. The show is fun, it’s not taking itself too seriously. And at the same time, there is the old Trek feel. It’s not Family Guy in space, by any stretch, so if that’s you’re worry, relax.

All in all, I enjoyed the show, and plan to keep watching. I’m looking forward to see where this series goes.
